Amillan – preparing Edgbaston for world-class cricket

Edgbaston Stadium is the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) and one of the sport’s leading venues globally, hosting major cricket tournaments every year. WCCC decided to revamp the stadium to update and enhance its reputation as a leading sporting venue, and turned to Amillan to assist.

The Challenge

Warwickshire County Cricket Club (WCCC) was undertaking a venue-wide £30 million refurbishment programme to update its facilities. Accessed via a new main entrance, the rebuilt Edgbaston stadium would seat 8250 spectators and include media and press rooms, a members’ area, catering services and a museum. WCCC needed a new robust infrastructure that could support these new facilities and enable the press to access internet and network communications systems to broadcast the sporting events.

The Solution

Following competitive tendering, Amillan was appointed for the infrastructure project. The technical solution was a complex system that could support a number of advanced services over a blend of fibre-optics and copper. Part of the solution was the delivery of over 1,000 access points throughout the entire venue and the integration of the existing building with the new scheme in a single, seamless network.

Starting in March, the infrastructure project had to be completed for the August, ready for England’s upcoming test match against India.

Phil Macdonald, Warwickshire County Cricket Club project director, said: “A high performance ICT infrastructure is an essential component in the operation of any world-class stadium and central to the successful delivery of events. In addition to internal systems, in today’s media age, we need to provide the world’s press with easy access to internet and network communications systems wherever and whenever required.”

Edgbaston’s vision to become a world-class stadium meant that it had to be able to provide all facilities expected by its corporate guests, fans and the media, which would require further technologies to sit on top of the network installed by Amillan. Based on the success of the first phase; Amillan was additionally awarded the IPTV and data networking systems projects, crucial to the media capabilities that Edgbaston was keen to provide. With only a short window available for the implementation of the IPTV and data networking, Amillan completed the installation in less than seven days.

The Benefits

Macdonald continued: “The solutions installed by Amillan enable us to meet the demands of the media and our guests, and means that we can compete with other venues around the world. Amillan’s ability to demonstrate its experience in the precise co-ordination and management of large-scale projects whilst working closely with all construction trades, in particular the M&E contractor, was a key contributing factor in Amillan being selected for Edgbaston stadium.”

The Future

Edgbaston Cricket Ground has hosted several England team fixtures since completion of the refurbished stadium including a test match with the West Indies and one day international with Australia. The ground now has more seating available for larger audiences, a large range of corporate hospitality suites, a visiting and learning centre and world-class press and media facilities.
